Der Elefant
During my semester abroad in Gdańsk a short story collection by Sławomir Mrożek fell into my hands. I decided to turn the short story "The Elephant" into a comic. The comic tells the story of a regional zoo, managed by an upstart director, who decides to opt for blow-up elephant instead of the real animal for his exhibit. Shortly after the unveiling of the new attraction, the elephant gets carried away by a gust of wind. The onlooking school children are traumatized, and turn into hooligans, naturally.
"The director of the Zoological Gardens has shown himself to be an upstart. He regarded his animals simply as stepping stones on the road of his own career. He was indifferent to the educational importance of his establishment. In his Zoo the giraffe had a short neck, the badger had no burrow and the whistlers, having lost all interest, whistled rarely and with some reluctance." – Sławomir Mrożek, The Elephant, 1958
Comic, 25 pages, 19 x 26 cm
